What is the OPT Program?

The Options for Parking and Transportation (OPT) program was developed to support QEII staff commuting to work during construction of the Halifax Infirmary Expansion Project.

QEII staff can participate by ‘OPTing’ into one of the options below:

1. Active & Sustainable Transportation

Staff who pledge to use active and/or sustainable transportation—including walking, biking, and carpooling—to and from work at least three times a week receive five free taxi vouchers from Halifax Transit's Guaranteed Ride Home Program to get home from work throughout the year in case of a personal/family emergency or illness, overtime, or if their carpool partner is unavailable.

Carpooling

100 spots are available Monday to Friday at the Summer Street Parkade on levels 6 & 7 to accommodate staff who carpool to work and arrive before 8:30 a.m. with a minimum of two staff per car (NS Health ID required). Each carpool vehicle will cost $10 per day to park.

2. Public Transportation

Halifax Transit EPasses is available to staff at a discounted rate of $49/month, paid for through payroll deductions or monthly Pre-authorized Debit (PAD) payments.

Staff who pledge to use public transit at least three times a week receive five free taxi vouchers from Halifax Transit's Guaranteed Ride Home Program to get home from work throughout the year in case of a personal/family emergency or illness, overtime, or if their carpool partner is unavailable.

Registration is open for the November 1, 2024 Epass now until Thursday, October 10.

3. Parking

Staff are able to park on-site during non-peak times (2:30 pm - 8:30 am) Monday through Friday, weekends, and holidays.

During peak times (8:30 am - 2:30 pm) Monday through Friday the following off-site parking options are available on a first-come, first-served basis for $8/day:

  • Garrison Grounds: The Garrison Grounds lot at the base of Citadel Hill has 230 spots available for staff. For Garrison Ground Availability through the Fall, please visit the Off-Site Parking page.
